Our mission at Namaspa is to help people live better lives. We recognize that often the people who could most benefit from the tools of yoga to help increase health, get centered and focused and relieve stress are not able to access classes, either due to financial hardship, homelessness, being in the criminal justice system, addictions or other hardships. For this reason, we have been dedicated for years to Community Outreach – bringing the benefits of yoga to those who wouldn’t otherwise have access.
Our primary non-profit of focus since we opened has been The Bethlehem Inn, Central Oregon’s largest homeless shelter. We have been teaching a yoga class a month (on average) to residents for the past several years, and raising funds for them in many of our quarterly Solstice and Equinox practices, as well as the Annual Yogi’s Unite Bend! Event that we help organize. Renee Hamilton manages the rotation of teachers at the Bethlehem Inn – if you are interested in helping you can email her at [email protected], or contact the Bethlehem Inn directly to donate at .
We started teaching classes at Mountain Star Family Relief Nursery as part of a Yoga Teacher Training project, and have continued teaching regular classes for volunteers and parents. Mountain Star is is a family-focused program that keeps babies and toddlers in Deschutes County safe from abuse and neglect. Tami Taylor is the primary teacher with Mountain Star – you can reach her at [email protected], or contact Mountain Star directly at to donate.
We strongly believe that yoga and meditation practice can be highly effective in treating alcohol and drug recovery, and we are volunteering our time to teach at one of Central Oregon’s primary rehabilitative treatment facilities, Best Care. We have been teaching one class per week for the Gambling Recovery group, and will be starting a 90 minute class per week for the Drug Court group. Suzie and Nancy manage the relationship with Best Care – you can contact [email protected] with interest, or Best Care directly to donate at 541-504-9577.
